Cornwall has a wonderful history. UNESCO gave the area international recognition by giving ten industrial landscape areas World Heritage Site status. Each location is an important part of the mining past of this part of England.

There are also museums and castles that you can explore to discover more of the rich history of the area. You can even check out ancestral houses and the Cornish Mining World Heritage Site.

Telegraph Museum Porthcurno

This museum was once the location of the biggest cable communications system in the world. Now, it is the only one in the world that is working. With the exception of the cable, each part is available to examine. You can check out the interesting displays which chart our love of technology. They go from discussing where electricity began to the modern tech we use today.

Maen Castle

You should check out this Iron Age promontory fort. It is just outside Sennen and very easy to access. There were over 300 pieces of pottery from the early Iron Age found when this “castle” was excavated. It is only one of two sites with pottery from this date in Cornwall. The stone rampart is a part of the defences which protect a ditch across the headland. There is a steep hillside on one side of this site and sheer cliffs on the other. This shows how defensible it once was.
